Interview with MsC Hannah Lorn, DoAO, Animal Orthopedist
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and experience as an Animal Orthopedist?
A: Sure, I am a licensed orthopedists with over 10 years of experience , with a focus on Human and Animal Orthopedics. I have worked with many dogs who have suffered from knee injuries.
Q: Can you explain the different types of knee injuries that dogs can suffer from?
A: Some common knee injuries in dogs include cruciate ligament tears, patellar luxation, and osteochondritis dissecans. Cruciate ligament tears are one of the most common knee injuries in dogs and can occur due to trauma or degeneration. Patellar luxation is a condition in which the kneecap dislocates from its normal position and can be congenital or acquired. Osteochondritis dissecans is a condition in which a piece of cartilage and bone separates from the joint surface.
Q: How are these injuries typically treated?
A: The treatment options for knee injuries in dogs will vary depending on the specific injury and the dog's overall health. In some cases, conservative management such as rest, bracing and physical therapy may be sufficient. However, surgical intervention may be necessary for more severe injuries. Common surgical procedures include cruciate ligament repair, patellar luxation correction, and joint debridement for osteochondritis dissecans.
Q: Can you tell us about the use of dog knee braces in the treatment of knee injuries?
A: Dog Hind Leg Support also called Knee braces can be a useful tool in the management of knee injuries in dogs. They can help to stabilize the joint and provide support to the injured ligament or cartilage. They can also help to reduce pain and inflammation. It is important to note that a knee brace should only be used under the guidance of an Animal Orthopedist and should be properly fitted to the individual dog.
Q: Are there any types of dogs that may be more likely to benefit from a knee brace?
A: Knee braces can be beneficial for dogs of all breeds and sizes, but they may be especially useful for larger breeds or dogs with a genetic predisposition to knee injuries. For example, breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Rottweilers are known to have a higher incidence of cruciate ligament tears.
Q: Are there any new or experimental treatments for dog knee injuries that you are currently aware of?
A: There are always new and experimental treatments being researched for various conditions in veterinary medicine. Some newer surgical options for cruciate ligament repair include the use of synthetic ligaments and stem cell therapy. These treatments are currently considered experimental and more research is needed to determine their long-term effectiveness.
Q: Are there any tips or advice you can offer to dog owners whose pets have suffered a knee injury?
A: If your dog has suffered a knee injury, it is important to consult with an Animal Orthopedist as soon as possible. They can help to determine the best course of treatment for your individual pet. In the meantime, be sure to provide your dog with a comfortable, quiet place to rest and keep them on a leash to prevent them from overexerting themselves. It is also important to follow your Animal Orthopedist's instructions on how to properly fit and use the knee brace, to ensure the best outcomes for your dog's recovery.
